I’m going to be honest when I first saw these bedside carts trending on Instagram, I thought they were a little extra.
Then I had a baby.
And now I’m here to tell you that if you’re expecting, you might want one too.
After birth, getting around was harder than I expected. I had two small tears that thankfully didn’t require stitches and a pretty rough hemorrhoid. I labored and gave birth on my knees, and my legs felt incredibly weak for the first few days afterward.
My midwife also encouraged me to follow the 5-5-5 rule:
- 5 days in the bed
- 5 days around the bed
- 5 days around the house
The idea is to give your body time to rest and recover instead of jumping right back into normal life.
Having everything I needed within arm’s reach made a huge difference. It meant fewer trips across the house, easier nighttime diaper changes, and more time focusing on healing and soaking up those newborn snuggles.
And if a rolling cart isn’t in your budget, I highly recommend at least using a basket or caddy beside your bed. The goal isn’t to have a Pinterest-perfect setup it’s to make postpartum life a little easier.
So, what did I keep in my bedside cart?
Top Shelf: Baby Essentials
This shelf held the items I reached for the most throughout the day and night.
- Diapers
- Wipes
- Baby grooming kit
- Baby lotion
- Burp cloths
- Sleep sacks
Having these within reach meant I could handle most diaper changes and quick cleanups without ever leaving the bedroom.
Middle Shelf: Breastfeeding Essentials
If you’re breastfeeding, this shelf quickly becomes your best friend.
- Nursing pads
- Nipple cream
- Extra blankets
- Extra burp cloths
- Water bottle (trust me, you’ll be thirsty!)
- Snacks for late-night feeds
I spent so many hours nursing in those early weeks, and having these items nearby made those long feeding sessions much more comfortable.
Bottom Shelf: Backup for the Backups
Because somehow you always run out of things at the worst possible time.
- Extra wipes
- Extra diapers
- Coconut oil
This shelf was basically my emergency stash so I didn’t have to ask someone to grab supplies every few hours.
My Biggest Postpartum Tip
Don’t worry about creating the perfect postpartum setup.
The goal isn’t aesthetics—it’s making recovery easier.
Whether you use a rolling cart, a basket, or even a cardboard box beside your bed, having your essentials organized and close by can make those first few weeks feel much less overwhelming.
Your only job after birth is to heal, feed your baby, and soak in all those precious newborn moments.
The laundry can wait.
The dishes can wait.
The baby cuddles can’t. 🤍
